EA's Zelda: The American publisher unveils a new title designed to capture more Japanese gamers.

September 23, 2009 - At its Tokyo Showcase today Electronic Arts unveiled a new Nintendo DS adventure designed to intrigue the Japanese audience -- although its resemblance to a certain other action adventure game will no doubt appeal to gamers everywhere. Tsumuji is a new game for EA that looks and plays very similarly to The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. You control a young hero from a top down perspective, using the stylus for all movement. Just point where you want the hero to go and he'll hurry to that spot. There are also platforming sections where you may have to skip across a river on stones or leap through tree branches.

One of the first things you'll notice about the hero is that he blurs when jumping to indicate he is capable of quick bursts of speed. The visuals are presented in a slick anime style complete with big Bambi eyes for all characters. Gameplay is on the bottom DS screen while a map displays your location on top.

After an impressive opening cut scene showing a ninja discovering a glowing gem that seems to grant him evil powers, the game begins with our hero at home with his family. Mom is making breakfast and brother doesn't want to wake up, yet. Just as in Zelda, you can pick up pots lying in the corner and toss them around. Unfortunately, all the text is in Japanese so we don't yet know the story details or what these characters are talking about.

After exploring town for a bit we found a hole in the outer fence that we could crawl through and roam the countryside. We soon happened upon a light puzzle section where we had to push/pull stone statues into their proper place in a mountainside. This caused the entire mountain to spin around, revealing a hidden hut in a forest grove. We moved in closer, initiating a stealth section where the hero crawled under the floorboards and tried not to alert anyone to his presence. The bottom screen shows a close up of the main character while the top showed what was going on above the floor. A circle on the top screen followed the hero around and indicated his noise level -- green for quiet and red for noisy.

During a trailer shown before we had hands-on time with the game we spotted a giant crab monster, presumably a boss.

Tsumuji is being developed in Japan and will be released there next spring. It's a very different game for EA and one we want to play more of. No word on a U.S. release, yet.
